Gjirokastra – About a week ago, three members of a family, respectively 62, 57 and 28 years, died accidentally on the national road Tepelenë-Gjirokastra, in the south. Unfortunately, their lives were not disrupted because of the speed, but because of wrong placement of protective metal structure.
Gentian Mullai, spokesman for the Police Department of the District of Gjirokastra, says the accident was fatal, because metallic borders did not play their defensive role. “Borders in place to protect, kill,” says Mullai. According to him, all metal borders that are on the national road-Tepelenë Gjirokastra, 24 km in length, are located technically wrong.

“Terminal borders should not stay in the air, but flush with the ground. This mistake has cost lives and someone must take responsibility, “argues Mullai, who adds that this situation must end immediately and urgently to fix the error. Mullai specifies that if the road accident had occurred in other conditions, they would be living today.
“At the moment of collision is determined that the end of the borders have burst the metal chassis of the vehicle in half, which does not leave any chance of survivals,” says Mullai. Further, Mullai notes that overall accidents are caused by excess speed, disregard of warning signs, and the driver’s negligence.
“In the south, the modernization of the new national road started from 2000, but the number of victims has increased significantly”, Mullai estimates. According to him, this year, there were nine traffic accidents, with 12 dead and 16 wounded.
Warnings have been set at every dangerous point, but unfortunately we find that most of the road accidents are caused in safe places”, specifies Mullai.
Paqesor Aliko, Regional Road Director for the district of Gjirokastra, said that it administers 270 km, 89 km from the district belong to Permet, Gjirokastra district 65 km and 116 km to Tepelenë district. “The technical condition of national roads in the south appear quite good,” said Aliko.
The national road Jorgucat (Gjirokastra) – Saranda, is maintained, even in this road axis are placed all warning signs, and retaining walls are built.
Tepelene-Ballsh remains the most problematic road. Despite maintenance, it continues to create problems for drivers, until the completion of the new highway Fier – Tepelenë which will be put into function in 2013.
“On this highway, the firm implementing the project continues to show careless with security measures. They don’t care about the taxpayer lives, but profit. This practice must end, “concludes Aliko.
