Hospital waste remain a gangrene for the city of Elbasan. They jump over the place, while the law is determined where to jump from the first moment in the respective bins and until the conclusion taken by companies licensed for treatment. But unfortunately the findings on the ground show that the medical waste as hazardous for human life continue to jump in the same place with urban waste. This fact is established by the naked eye making videos and photos, but also asking local residents. They show that every day see the hospital cars throw the waste in the area of Kraste. During several visits to the area of Kraste where the urban waste are appointed for the entire city, it is determined that in the same place end up the waste hospital and pharmaceuticals waste. For this situation that every day is getting deadly forms nobody takes responsibility. Elbasan Municipality itself, which considers Krasta as the lungs of the city is expressed in consecutive years that will address this problem, but even to this day there has been no result.
But what is the destination of hospital waste as burned together with urban waste? Investigim.al has taken secretly interview with local residents who show that after waste are burning, later thay are thrown into the banks of Shkumbini river, which aggravates even more the environment and the air in the city of Elbasan.

Journalist: We want to know where hospital waste disposed? Jump here!
Resident: Yes here jump.
Journalist: Here jump all?
Journalist: Now recently they have been laid?
Resident: I do not know, but I saw syringes today, I came here today.
Journalist: Where did you see? Can you tell me?
Resident: Hence here.
Journalist: Did the hospital waste come here where are discharged other garbage of the city?
Journalist: How many times and with what?
Resident: It depends, come two, three, one.
Journalist: Did they come with vans of the hospital?
Resident: With cars, yes. Hospital cars. It is a hospital car that comes daily.
Journalist: What happens later.Did they burn them, throw them, what happens here?
Resident: they throw, push down in the river.
To continue with our investigation we address to Elbasani Hospital where initially asked to see the director, Desantila Tahiraj, from whom we did not receive insisting any answer we continue insisting to interview the nurses, who were silent and sometimes showed us the door nervous. Here are some of our interviews with random nurses, mainly asking if there are special containers for medical waste and other urban waste and how they treated them after collection. In fact, during our visits inside the hospital premises and carried pictures there were not baskets set with symbols.
Audio recorded with Hospital nurse in Elbasan.
Nurse:You should get permission from the director and we give you what you want.
Journalist: Sorry, I just was at the director, asked her for an interview, but nothing. We want to know just where hospital waste are disposed?
Nurse: Without the permission of the Directorate nothing girls.
Journalist: Why need the permission of the Directorate for something so simple?
Nurse: Goodbye girls and all the best.
Journalist:You can you tell us here are the appropriate bins and so.
Nurse: No. I do not want to say you at all.
Journalist: Look these here, for example, what are they? (In the visits room were two baskets with used syringes serums along with various urban waste).
Nurse: Girls, can you get out.
Journalist: Did you scare ?!
Nurse: No I was not intimidated, though I have no fear. You were not introduced, nothing.
Audio registered, doctor and nurse about medical waste and hospital bins.
Journalist: At this basket here, there must be some other containers for urban waste, hospital waste must be set separately and not together.
Nurse: No they are not hospital waste.
Doctor: Go and recommend to the directory.
Journalist: Those black bags … what do they have?
Doctor: Go and ask the directory, go.
Journalist: We were in the directory.
Doctor: Go and make project.
In another place close to the Pediatric Hospital is an overcrowding building not only urban waste but also the pharmaceutical and hospital, which has recently been used as a public bathroom for neighborhood residents. Investigim.al insisted in that issue of hospital waste. We attempted again to contact the director of the Hospital of Elbasan to seek an answer. After some time waiting, her secretary met us with the hospital head nurse, Brigena Bylyku, with whom we realized an interview which was to conduct the outsourcing of waste for disposal.
Interview with the head nurse of the hospital, Brikena Bylyku
Journalist: What is the destination? Where they are destroyed?
The nurse in charge: We, as we drive where recycled. We meet a commission there.
Journalist: Have you signed a contract for the hospital waste going to destroy?
The nurse in charge: Yes.
Journalist: With whom you signed the contract? Which company?
The nurse in charge: The contract has nothing to do with me, it is decided by competent persons involved in this work.
Journalist: We want to know where the waste of the hospital go?
The nurse in charge: I’m not competent person where the hospital waste go. I know that we depart to the company that is contracted.
Journalist: What is the company name ?
The nurse in charge: Meditel. In all wards are yellow containers of hospital waste, waste sharp containers. Each ward has certain registers with specific weight of waste. There is a fundamental register in that building that I appointed you and when are the entrances and exits of the waste. So I said once the waste is well regulated in this hospital, but we can not exclude the possibility, those opportunities that you say or you have on your camera. I can not rule out individually what happens to a person in night shift, but in the context of the waste is well regulated and we go out together or not with me that I’m staff of this hospital, and you can see that every pavilion has its respective glassware and guides as urban and hospital waste.
Journalist: That is what you can tell us because we have not seen, even we found hospital waste in bins that are outside.
The nurse in charge: It seems absurd to me personally because I can not go out every day to see the waste, but when I get out, I made observations.
Journalist: Maybe we happened to a bad case whwn are thrown there, but we have two months that observe this thing and it’s the same thing, constantly thrown in waste baskets. We have managed to prove not only the case to catch the hospital car throwing the waste in Krastë.
The nurse in charge: Hospital car is absurd, do not tell me again. It’s a shame.
Journalist: But the residents have said to us that come and jump hospital waste here, as we have proved the waste.
The nurse in charge: What waste?
Journalist: Syringes, sera.
The nurse in charge: Look out there, they are not from us.
Beyond the Hospital, investigim.al observe the waste situation in some other subjects as pharmacies and private laboratories which have not signed any contract for waste disposal. Suddenly it is not know what their destination is and whether there are other areas like that of Kraste. Most pharmacists and the analysts working on these subjects refused to answer and others claimed (in hidden camera) that they jump into the waste bins by their owners.
Hidden camera with a laboratory technician of a private laboratory of doctor Fatos Stafa
Journalist: Where do you dispose the medical waste?
Technician: the owner pour here.
Journalist: Who is the owner?
Technician: The owner upstairs, we put in the bag and leave there. Then pour the owner.
Journalist: Where is he casting them?
Technician: I do not know.
After all these investigations, what still remains a concern for residents of the city of Elbasan is uncertainty about their health from medical waste. Being that this epidemic is observed across the district of Elbasan, the solution must be addressed at national level and not at local as irresponsibility of leaders of the hospital or the municipality.
